What City of Life and Death Is About
The occupation of Nanjing in 1937 and what followed, told not through a single hero but from several separate points of view, one of them a Japanese soldier. Lu Chuan's choice caused argument in China, since granting humanity to the occupying side was not expected. The film is in black and white with almost no music, and the violence is shown without being made watchable. The crowd scenes are enormous and not digital. It is heavy going, especially in the second half.
