Different for Girls

Paul is a motorcycle courier. One day he hits a taxi and has a row with the woman inside it. He knows her: Kim, from school. Back then her name was Karl, everybody at school went for her, and the only one who protected her was Paul. Twenty years have gone by. Kim transitioned four years ago, has built a quiet life, and writes verses for greeting cards. Paul is still the same man; he says whatever comes into his head and burns everything around him. The two grow close again, and something Paul does puts the life Kim built at risk. Richard Spence directs the British film; ninety-seven minutes, with Steven Mackintosh as Kim and Rupert Graves as Paul. It took the top prize at the Montreal film festival in 1996. It presents Kim not as someone to pity or laugh at but as someone who has made a life.
