What Din Tao: Leader of the Parade Is About
Fung Kai’s 2012 Taiwanese film is about a din tao troupe in Taichung. Din tao is a traditional performance given in front of religious processions: the performers take on the faces of gods or wear heavy puppet costumes, and the work demands martial arts, acrobatics and endurance. Society has long associated the people who do it with gangs. A-Tai, son of the Uncle Da who runs the troupe, has fallen out with his father and gone to Taipei to study rock music, and his return and the rebuilding of the troupe are the body of the film. Made cheaply, it became the biggest Taiwanese hit of 2012.
