What Dirty Hands Is About
Buenaventura is Colombia’s largest Pacific port and one of the most visible wounds left by the drug trade, and that is where this film puts its camera. A torpedo packed with cocaine, towed underwater behind a battered fishing boat, sends Jacobo, who has done this before, and Delio, who is nowhere near ready for it, on a long run along the coast. Josef Kubota Wladyka shot his debut entirely on location in the region, and rather than making the trade look glamorous he keeps returning to what it costs the people who live on that shore. Spike Lee, who had taught Wladyka at New York University, came aboard as executive producer, and the film won the award for best new narrative director at Tribeca in 2014.
