Disco Pigs

Pig and Runt were born on the same day in the same hospital and have not been apart since. They built their own language, their own rules and a common front against everyone outside. As their seventeenth birthday approaches Runt starts taking an interest in the world and Pig reads that as loss, with his response sliding toward violence. Kirsten Sheridan adapted Enda Walsh's play and shot it in the streets of Cork. Cillian Murphy had played Pig on stage and brings the part from there; it counts as his first major film performance. The invented language the two speak between themselves is the most original thing in it and also what keeps the audience outside. It begins like a love story and ends as a story of dependency. Who it is for: viewers who like Irish independent cinema and intense stage-rooted performance. Who it is not for: anyone avoiding violence and obsessive closeness told in a disturbing register.
