What Dive Bomber Is About
A navy surgeon and a senior flyer set out to develop a suit that will stop pilots blacking out when they come out of a high-altitude dive. The tests are dangerous, the losses are real, and for a long time neither man takes the other seriously. Eventually it stops being about pride and becomes about the life of everyone who flies. Michael Curtiz's film opened in August 1941, roughly four months before Pearl Harbor. The US Navy gave the production an unusual degree of access: it was shot at the naval air station at Coronado and on the deck of the USS Enterprise. That makes it as much a Technicolor record of the 1941 navy as a drama. Errol Flynn and Fred MacMurray face off through it.
