Veer-Zaara

A love story that runs between India and Pakistan. Veer is a rescue pilot in the Indian air force. He saves a Pakistani woman named Zaara after a bus crash. She has come to India to scatter her grandmother's ashes. They spend a few days together. Then Zaara goes home; a fiancé and a life arranged by her family are waiting. The second line is years later. In a prison in Pakistan there is an old inmate known by a number who does not speak. A young lawyer, Saamiya, takes his file and tries to get him to talk. He has been inside for twenty-two years and nobody knows who he is. The film builds the story between those two times. The music is a story of its own: the compositions were drawn from unused work by Madan Mohan, who died years earlier, and arranged by his son. Shah Rukh Khan plays Veer, Preity Zinta plays Zaara and Rani Mukerji the lawyer. Yash Chopra directed. It was among the most-watched productions of its year in India.
