Briggs, a former Ranger with brain damage and PTSD, is given a job: get Lulu, the military dog of a dead comrade, to the funeral. After the funeral the dog is to be put down. Along the way it becomes clear the two of them carry the same injuries. Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin directed it together, a first for both, with Tatum also starring. The origin is personal. When Tatum's own dog, also named Lulu, was diagnosed with cancer in 2018, he took a road trip with her, and he described making the film as cathartic. On a 15 million dollar budget it grossed 85 million worldwide, taking 61.8 million domestically and opening with 17.4 million over Presidents' Day weekend. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 77 percent. Critics praised Tatum's direction and performance, and several noted that selling it as a comedy was misleading given how much of it is drama. Who it is for: viewers who like road movies and are interested in veterans' trauma. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a light dog comedy. The film goes directly at suicide and war trauma.
