What Don Q Son of Zorro Is About
Don Cesar de Vega, the son of Zorro, goes to Spain, crosses swords with a vicious officer of the Queen’s Guard and wins the affection of a young heiress. When the officer frames him for murder, Don Cesar fakes his own death, withdraws to the family’s ruined castle and prepares his revenge there. It is Douglas Fairbanks’ sequel to The Mark of Zorro of 1920; he plays both the son and the aged Zorro, and special effects put the two characters in the same frame. What is most talked about is Fairbanks’ work with a whip. The director, Donald Crisp, also plays the villain, and Mary Astor and Warner Oland are in the cast. The story is taken loosely from the 1909 novel by Kate and Hesketh Hesketh-Prichard.
