What Donald Cried Is About
Written, directed by and starring Kris Avedisian, the film begins with Peter, a Manhattan banker, returning to his home town of Warwick after twenty years for his grandmother's funeral. Without his wallet, he has to turn to the one person he knows on the street, his old school friend Donald. What starts as a simple favour becomes a van ride that swallows the day and a past the two of them have never discussed. The film builds Donald as neither pitiable nor a joke, and what is genuinely uncomfortable is that the life Peter thought he had left behind still recognises him. The comedy sits permanently on the edge of embarrassment, closing the distance between laughing and flinching. It is small, confined and uncomfortable to the end.
