The Return

Gülcan refuses the offer of Reşit, the landowner on whose fields she works, and marries İbrahim, the man she loves. But Reşit will not let her be; he first puts the couple into debt and difficulty, then tries everything else. To get out of that squeeze İbrahim has to go to Germany to work, setting off with the promise that he will send for Gülcan. But the word she waits for does not come, and the woman is left alone in the village under the landowner’s pressure. Türkan Şoray’s ninety four minute Turkish film is the first she directed; she plays Gülcan herself, Kadir İnanır plays İbrahim and the music is by Yalçın Tura. It was completed in 1972.
