Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar

The film tells the life of the jurist and politician B. R. Ambedkar. The account covers the years between 1901 and 1956. Ambedkar studies at Columbia University. The film opens with those years. Back in India he works for the rights of the oppressed classes. He fights against the order of untouchability. He takes part in the independence movement. A deep difference of view separates him from Gandhi. He asks for a separate electorate for the oppressed classes. That demand brings a hard argument between the two men. Ambedkar later works on the constitution. He chairs the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly. He plays a decisive part in shaping the text. The film won three national awards in India. One of them went to the actor in the title role. Mammootty and Sonali Kulkarni appear in the one hundred eighty minute film, an Indian production Jabbar Patel finished in 2000.
