What Drag Becomes Him Is About
The documentary looks closely at the life of Jinkx Monsoon, a drag performer known well beyond her own city. The preparation, the make up, the costumes and the show are in the film, and so is the life off stage: the beginnings in Seattle, family, money, and what recognition brings with it. The film grew out of a web series and follows the road from a working class child in a struggling family to an international stage. The account does not set out to explain drag to an audience, it gives the person doing it, and it keeps that difference deliberately. The distance between the name on stage and the name at home is part of the subject too. Working in close shots and long takes keeps the film from turning into publicity. Alex Berry’s eighty two minute American documentary was completed in 2015.
