What Dreams Is About

Karen Shakhnazarov and Aleksandr Borodyansky’s 1993 film lays two periods on top of one another. A Russian countess living in 1893 keeps having strange dreams in which she sees herself washing dishes in the Moscow of 1993, after the Soviet Union has collapsed. The film builds the hundred-year distance as a nightmare, and by describing the poverty of the nineties from the vantage of the past it manages to make both periods look strange. It is one of those Russian films from the start of the nineties that resists being placed comfortably now. Oleg Basilashvili and Armen Dzhigarkhanyan are among the familiar faces in it.
