What Dry Movie Is About
Jonas, who presents the weather on a television channel, returns to the place he was born, the parched Vale da Rocha in north-eastern Brazil, when he hears that his father has been killed. On land he has stayed away from for years, fights over water, family reckonings and the business his father left behind are waiting for him. His grandmother Dona Carmo, who sent for him, expects something else of him: to avenge his father. The film sets the drought up not merely as scenery but as the reason for what people do to each other, and breaks in with music, dreams and passages that leave realism behind. Guilherme Weber, Giulia Gam and Selton Mello appear in Lírio Ferreira’s hundred and seventeen minute Brazilian film; it was completed in 2005.
