What Perfumed Ball Is About
In 1936 a Lebanese born peddler named Benjamin Abrahão walks into the dried out sertão of northeastern Brazil carrying a camera. He means to film Lampião, the bandit leader the army had spent years failing to catch, along with his whole cangaço band. His closeness to Padre Cícero opens the door, the footage does get shot, and then the Estado Novo dictatorship comes after it. Lírio Ferreira and Paulo Caldas direct the story not as an outlaw legend but as the moment that legend was first put on film, and the tension sits in what a state does with an image it cannot control. The look and the soundtrack carry the mark of the Recife scene of the nineties.
