What Dutchman Is About

A young Black man is sitting in a nearly empty subway car. He is minding his own business and troubling nobody. A white woman, the only other passenger, starts talking to him. The conversation moves from flirtation into provocation. She pushes him and keeps pushing; he holds out up to a point. In the end he lets his anger out and says what he has not been saying. She kills him. The film is adapted from a one act play by Amiri Baraka, who was named LeRoi Jones when he wrote it. The fifty five minutes take place in a single subway car. Shirley Knight was named best actress at Venice for the part. Anthony Harvey’s British film was completed in 1966.
