What Eagle vs Shark Is About
A withdrawn woman working in a fast food shop is drawn to one of the regulars. He believes himself a misunderstood hero and goes back to his home town to take revenge for a fight at school. The film gets its comedy from awkwardness while never making her ridiculous; the narrative questions his self-pity and asks how much of it she will carry. The scenes are deliberately quiet and static. It is Taika Waititi's first feature, with Jemaine Clement and Loren Taylor. It is a New Zealand production. Who it's for: those who like odd, low-key independent comedy. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a charming romantic comedy; one of the leads is unpleasant throughout.
