What Eames: The Architect and the Painter Is About
Charles and Ray Eames were a husband-and-wife design partnership who worked in California from the forties into the seventies. They are best known for their plywood and fibreglass chairs, but the Eames Office produced their own house, exhibitions, toys and hundreds of short films besides the furniture. The documentary brings together that forty years of output and what the young designers who worked in the office have to say. The film was directed by Jason Cohn and Bill Jersey together, with James Franco narrating. The most interesting part of the documentary is how the work was divided: for years only Charles's name came forward, while Ray's contribution stayed behind in the habit of the period, and the film takes that up directly. The people who worked in the office say too that they did not get the visibility they were owed. The film does not exalt the Eameses; it shows how many people stood behind what they made.
