What The Look of Silence Is About
An optician in Indonesia who lost his brother in the killings of 1965 does what the victims' families never do: he visits the perpetrators one by one and, while testing their eyes, asks what happened. The film makes no accusation; the camera simply waits and records the answer or the silence. The narrative takes its tension from those rooms, because the perpetrators are still in power and the man asking will go on living in the same district. Joshua Oppenheimer directed. It was designed alongside his earlier film on the same subject. Most of the Indonesian crew remained unnamed for their safety. A real warning: the details of the killings are described calmly by the perpetrators. It is not graphic to look at; what is described is very heavy.
