What The Act of Killing Is About
The 2012 documentary by Joshua Oppenheimer, Christine Cynn and a director who stayed anonymous finds the men who carried out the killings in Indonesia in the nineteen-sixties. It asks them to restage the events as film scenes. The killers do it willingly. The film makes the fact that the crime was never punished its real subject; the narrative looks for a crack inside the restagings. The Indonesian crew members remained unnamed for their safety. It was nominated for an Academy Award. A companion documentary followed. Who it's for: those who can take difficult historical documentary. Who it's not for: viewers who cannot bear detailed accounts of murder; the perpetrators tell them laughing.
