Supersonic

The documentary covers Oasis's first three years: a band forming in Manchester, two albums, and the concerts played to two hundred and fifty thousand people over two nights at Knebworth in 1996. It ends there and says nothing about the split or the years after. The film is not interested in music history. It is interested in two brothers being in the same band: Noel writes the songs, Liam sings them, and each both carries and wrecks the other. It is built on separately recorded conversations with them, and the best thing in it is the two accounts of the same event. The form leans on archive: tour footage, home video, rehearsal tapes and animated photographs. Nobody speaks on camera; the voices sit over the images. Mat Whitecross directed, with the team behind Asif Kapadia's Senna and Amy among the producers, which is where the method comes from. The section on Knebworth, where two and a half million people applied for tickets, meaning a significant share of the British population queued for them, is the film's peak. Who it is for: viewers who like Oasis and British music of the nineties. Who it is not for: anyone wanting the whole story. The film stops deliberately in 1996 and says not a word about the band's following fifteen years.
