What Zappa Is About

Frank Zappa's archive sat in the basement of his own house for years: home movies, rehearsal tapes, concert recordings, interviews, scores. Alex Winter ran a Kickstarter to digitise it, cleared a million dollars inside a month, and then built a life of Zappa out of what came up. It moves through his childhood, the Mothers of Invention years, his fight with the censors, and the orchestral work of his last period, including his 1985 testimony before the US Senate against labelling records. His family talks, so do the musicians who played with him, along with Steve Vai and Pamela Des Barres. The most honest thing about it is that it never tries to make him likeable.
