What Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll Is About
Ian Dury caught polio as a child, lost the use of an arm and a leg, and then refused the life everyone had already written for him, becoming one of the loudest voices of the British punk and new wave years. The film gives him no halo: the man who owns a room from the stage is careless and cruel with his son and with the women around him. Mat Whitecross avoids the straight biographical line and builds something scrappy, noisy and closer to music hall. Andy Serkis plays Dury, with Naomie Harris and Olivia Williams as the women in his life and Bill Milner as his boy.
