What Early Spring Is About
Around 1926, Xiao Jianqiu, a hesitant and downcast young intellectual, is invited by a friend to teach in a small town. He supports the widow of a dead classmate while also drawing close to Tao Lan, his friend’s sister, and the town’s gossip and the jealousy of its wealthy young men close in on him. In the end he gives up his own attachment in order to help the widow. Xie Tieli adapted Rou Shi’s novel February. After its release in 1963 the film was attacked for measuring its characters by morality rather than by class, and both it and its director paid for that.
