Edi

Edi and his friend Jureczek live by collecting scrap in a Polish city. Edi likes to read and keeps the books he finds. When the two brothers who control the neighbourhood learn that their sister is pregnant, they name Edi as the one responsible. Edi is punished severely for something he did not do and does not say a word. Then the baby is born and handed to him to look after. It is Piotr Trzaskalski's first film. The telling uses the mould of social realism but does not go for pity; Edi's silence reads not as the attitude of a victim but as a choice. Henryk Gołębiewski is in the lead, returning to the screen with this film after a long absence; his performance was much discussed in Poland. The film stood out at the country's main awards and travelled from festival to festival abroad. The whole idea of the film is that the scrap, the book and the baby end up in the same room.
