What Educating Rita Is About
Rita, a hairdresser of twenty six, wants to find out who she is and enrols at the Open University, where she is assigned to Dr Frank Bryant, a literature tutor. Frank’s marriage is over, his new girlfriend is sleeping with his best friend, and he cannot get through a day without whisky. Her appetite feeds off his exhaustion, but the more Rita is educated the more both of them lose something. Adapted from Willy Russell’s play and directed by Lewis Gilbert, it is essentially a two hander for Michael Caine and Julie Walters.
