A Cry from the Streets

A woman working in child welfare deals with children in care: placing them in homes, finding families, going to a police station at midnight to collect one. Beside her is a man who works as an electrician, and a closeness slowly forms between them. The subject is not heroism but bureaucracy. Good intentions are not enough on their own; every child is a file, every placement a signature, and every rush a risk of error. The film's best passages are the moments when the rules do not protect a child but delay one. The form belongs to the British social film of the period: real streets, cramped houses, long scenes worked out with child actors. Emotion is not overplayed, but the film trusts the presence of the children on screen. It is adapted from a novel by Elizabeth Coxhead. Lewis Gilbert directs, a filmmaker working on both war and social subjects in the British cinema of those years. Max Bygraves was better known then as a singer and entertainer; here he takes a dramatic role. Barbara Murray plays the welfare officer and Dana Wilson one of the children.
