El Harifa

Raouf El Sayed's 2024 Egyptian film is about a gifted footballer forced to change schools. Uprooted from his old life, the boy finds a second chance with a local team chasing a championship. The film follows the known structure of sports films: a talented but ill-fitting player, a team that does not believe in him, solidarity arriving at the end. But showing neighbourhood football in Cairo realistically gives it a texture of its own; the pitches are dirt, the kits incomplete, the training irregular. The cast is young and largely unknown, which is the film's best decision; not using established stars gives the scenes their naturalness. The narrative moves predictably and the emotional peak arrives exactly where expected. Who it's for: family audiences who like youth and sports films. Who it's not for: viewers looking for an unpredictable story; the film never leaves the genre's template.
