What Electroma Is About
Two robots drive across the American desert. They reach a town; everyone in it is a robot too. The two enter a laboratory and have human faces made for themselves there; silicone, hair, skin colour. When they come out the town will not accept them. They are chased. They start walking into the desert and the faces begin to melt in the heat. There is not a single line of dialogue in the film. The narrative proceeds through image and music alone. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo direct; both are members of Daft Punk. The music is not Daft Punk's; the selection includes names such as Curtis Mayfield, Todd Rundgren and Brian Eno, and the choice defeated what most viewers expected. It was shown at Cannes in 2006 in the Directors' Fortnight. The matter it treats is the wish to be the same; the two characters want to be different, and what that earns is exclusion. Its rhythm is very slow and some shots run for minutes; this is a deliberate choice. The photography is in wide format and the desert landscape is the narrative's main material. Its limit is accessibility; it is an experimental work and entirely wrong for a viewer expecting a Daft Punk concert. Who it is for: viewers who like experimental cinema and narratives without dialogue. Who it is not for: it is very slow, has almost no plot, and does not meet expectations about the music.
