What Elvira I Will Give You My Life But I'm Using It Is About
Manolo Caro's 2014 Mexican film opens with a woman whose husband went out for cigarettes and never came back. Elvira waits, then starts looking, and the search turns less into finding him than into seeing what her own life has become. The film treats being left not as a tragedy but as a long-ignored fact finally becoming visible. The women around her, her sisters and friends, carry comparable silences in their own relationships. The tone is held between comedy and sadness, nodding at the melodrama language of Mexican television while gently mocking it. Cecilia Suárez gives a calm performance that carries the whole weight of the film. Who it's for: viewers who like Latin American comedy drama and stories centred on women. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a clear resolution and a definite answer about what happened to the husband.
