What Emil and the Detectives Is About
When a suspicious man buys Emil off with chocolate and takes the bundle of cash he was carrying, the boy works out a plan to catch him, and carries it out with a crew made up of the children of Berlin. Gerhard Lamprecht made the film in 1931 from Erich Kastner's book, shooting the street work in the real city. Children moving through the city on their own, relaying messages and outmanoeuvring adults still feels fresh. Fast for something from the first years of sound, and an early proof of how good a children's film can be.
