What Somewhere in Berlin Is About
The film is set just after the war. Berlin lies in ruins. Gustav and Willi play among those ruins. Other children from the neighbourhood are with them. The rubble is both a playground and a danger for them. Gustav is waiting for his father. The man has not yet come back from a prison camp. The waiting fills the boy’s days. One day a stranger arrives in the district. The man is in a wretched state. Nobody knows what to make of him. A black market runs among the ruins as well. The children grow up inside that arrangement. Charles Brauer and Harry Hindemith take the leads in Gerhard Lamprecht’s German film of 1946.
