Celestina comes to Rome from her village to work as a maid, and her inexperience keeps pushing her from one household to the next. What holds her up in the city is the solidarity of the other women doing the same work; what pulls her down is Fernando, the handsome plumber she trusts completely and who disappears the moment she is pregnant. Antonio Pietrangeli made this after a decade of writing screenplays and criticism, and his first film as a director already contains almost everything he would go on to make: the woman arriving from the provinces, exploited domestic labour, and a life nobody bothers to ask about.
