What End of Desire Is About
The second half of the nineteenth century, in Normandy. Jeanne Dandieu lives in a manor house with her parents and their servant Rosalie. She meets the handsome Julien and marries him quickly, and her happiness is short lived: she learns that he married her for her money and that he is deceiving her with Rosalie on top of it. Alexandre Astruc adapted the film from Guy de Maupassant’s novel and took it into competition at Venice. Maria Schell plays Jeanne. What it describes is less an affair than how a woman’s life is taken away from her.
