Endless Journey

While a home invasion and the murder that followed it are being investigated, the team of the Third Division questions a suspect. The suspect dies during the questioning. The whole team goes to prison. Six years later the team leader, Cheng Bing, is released, but the case has not left his head: the real killer is still out there and Cheng now has neither a badge nor any authority. He spends the next eleven years working ordinary jobs and looking for the man. It is based on a real case. Dai Mo's film uses the shape of a police story but is not after suspense; what it is really about is a man giving seventeen years of his life to a single name. Zhang Yi plays Cheng Bing and does not make the character a hero; he is someone who ages, drifts from job to job and loses his friends one by one. The other members of the team fall away along the road, one at a time. The film found a wide audience in China in 2023.
