Ecotopia

A group of city ecologists moves into a small Aegean village wanting to build a life close to nature. The villagers are pleased at first: they have sold their useless fields and old houses for good money. Then a plan for a thermal power plant in the area comes up. Who is against what turns out to be more tangled than expected, and both sides take to the street with their own version of what is right. Yüksel Aksu wrote and directed the film, and he does not turn the environmental fight into a slogan picture; he makes fun of the city environmentalists and the villagers alike. Aksu had brought the Aegean and its local speech to the screen before. The film opened at the end of 2011 and was seen by more than half a million people. The question of thermal power plants is still argued about in the same region today.
