What Ernesto Is About

In Trieste at the start of the twentieth century, Ernesto, the young son of a Jewish family, works at his uncle’s business. Not yet at ease with his own sexuality, he begins an affair with one of the adult workers there, and the difference in age and position sets the inequality of it from the beginning. Salvatore Samperi adapted the film from Umberto Saba’s largely autobiographical novel, published after the author’s death. Michele Placido won a Silver Bear in Berlin for his performance. One of very few Italian films of the period to take gay desire as its direct subject.
