What Euphoria Is About

At a wedding two people catch each other's eye. They do not speak and they do not know each other; they only look. Afterwards they go after that look. The woman is married and the man has a life of his own. Out on the steppe, in the middle of miles of empty land, each of them leaves home and starts walking towards the other. Ivan Vyrypaev's first feature does not look like the work of a director who came from playwriting: there is almost no dialogue and the landscape comes before everything. Wide shots of the Don steppe make up the film's language. The telling does not prettify the passion; it says from the start that this is not a choice but something coming at them, and that the end is already clear. It runs seventy-four minutes.
