What Eurocrime! The Italian Cop and Gangster Films That Ruled the '70s Is About
The documentary takes up the Italian poliziotteschi of the 1970s, the wave of hard cop and gangster pictures. At first glance these look like knock offs of American films such as Dirty Harry or The Godfather, when what they actually deal with are Italian matters: the Sicilian mafia and the political violence of those years. More interesting than the films themselves are the ways they were made, with stars performing their own stunts, shots stolen without permits and sound added later, while real crime and screen crime kept bleeding into each other. Mike Malloy’s hundred and twenty seven minute documentary features Franco Nero, Fred Williamson, Enzo G. Castellari, John Saxon and Henry Silva speaking about all of it.
