Evdokia

Evdokia is a sex worker, Yorgos a sergeant. They meet, and after a short and violent passion they marry. Her work stays over the relationship like a shadow; both of them try to get past their own inner conflict while everything around them is set on crushing them. Alexis Damianos builds it not as a love story but as two people resisting the place society has assigned them, and shows where that resistance runs out. Damianos made only three features, yet he counts among the great directors of Greek cinema, and in 1986 the Greek Film Critics Association voted Evdokia the best Greek film ever made. The zeibekiko Manos Loizos wrote for it became, quite apart from the film, one of the best known pieces of music in the country.
