What Evenings Is About
Frits Egters is a young man who cannot quite pull himself together. He is intelligent and easily wounded; disgust and disillusion have made him sardonic. There should be more to life than this, he thinks, but he does not know where to find it. The film follows his evenings: the family table, visits to friends, the radio, bedtime, and the next evening the same again. The account constructs no event; repetition itself becomes the subject, and it tells through duration what tedium actually is. It was adapted from a well known book of postwar Dutch literature. Thom Hoffman plays the lead in Rudolf van den Berg’s hundred and twenty two minute Dutch film, completed in 1989.
