Süskind

Walter Süskind is a Jew who fled Germany for the Netherlands. In Amsterdam he works for the Jewish Council and runs the Hollandsche Schouwburg, where the city's Jews must report before deportation. The small children are taken to the crèche across the road. Süskind uses that: he removes the children from the German records and has them smuggled out through the neighbouring college. To do it he has to stay close to the SS officer Aus der Fünten, keep him drinking, and hold his trust. Rudolf van den Berg directs, with Jeroen Spitzenberger as Süskind and Karl Markovics as Aus der Fünten. By this method Süskind saved hundreds of children. The Netherlands submitted the film for the Academy Awards.
