What Jakob the Liar Is About
A man living in a ghetto in Poland repeats a radio report he happened to overhear, and everyone assumes he has a hidden set. He has to keep the lie going. The film does not present hope as a kindness; the narrative shows at once that the invented news keeps people standing and puts them in danger. There is a comic register, and the ground never changes. Peter Kassovitz directed, with Robin Williams in the lead, adapting Jurek Becker's novel; the author spent his childhood in a ghetto and in the camps.
