Raskin’s, a long-running restaurant in Brooklyn, is about to close so that a complex of chain outlets can take the site. Over the course of a single day the stories of the people who work there and have built their lives around it run into one another; for these people, from different ethnic backgrounds and different rungs of the ladder, it is not only a job. Jim McKay distilled the screenplay from some sixty stories about race collected from real people in a project initiated by the writer Nelson George, who also executive produced, and funded by HBO. It is an HBO Films production, and it was actually shot at Ratner’s, the old restaurant on the Lower East Side.
