Our Song

In the Crown Heights neighbourhood of Brooklyn, three high school friends, Lanisha, Joycelyn and Maria, spend a summer together. All three are in the marching band called the Jackie Robinson Steppers and are rehearsing for the Labor Day parade. But their school closes because of asbestos removal and the three will be scattered to different schools; at the same time their family situations, money and their own decisions come between them. The film stages no large events; it describes a friendship coming apart of its own accord and how people drift without anyone wanting it. In Jim McKay’s ninety five minute American film Kerry Washington plays Lanisha, and it is her first film, with Anna Simpson and Melissa Martínez in the cast. It was completed in 2000.
