What Never Rarely Sometimes Always Is About
Autumn is seventeen, lives in Pennsylvania, and is pregnant. In her state a minor cannot have an abortion without a guardian's consent. She and her cousin Skylar get on a bus to New York. There is no money, nowhere to stay, and it emerges on the way that the procedure will not be finished in a day. The film proceeds quietly. Autumn explains almost nothing; whose child it is goes unsaid, the situation at home is never described. The viewer assembles the information from details. The title comes from one scene. During intake at the clinic a counsellor puts standard questions about partner violence to Autumn, and she must answer each with one of four options: never, rarely, sometimes, always. The scene plays in a single take with the camera fixed on her face. The counsellor is played by a real social worker, Kelly Chapman. Sidney Flanigan plays Autumn and Talia Ryder plays Skylar; it is Flanigan's first film. It won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at Berlin in 2020. Quiet, distant and unadorned.
