What Yuni Is About

Yuni had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won a prize in the Platform section, juried that year by Riz Ahmed. Kamila Andini became the first director to compete twice in the Platform category, having previously been there in 2017 with The Seen and Unseen. The film was selected as Indonesia's official submission for the 94th Academy Awards but didn't make the shortlist, while winning seven prizes, including Best Film, at Indonesia's own 2021 Maya Awards. Who it's for: anyone curious about a coming of age drama from a director who competed twice in Toronto's Platform section, winning seven prizes at Indonesia's own film awards. Who it's not for: viewers who would be disappointed to learn it wasn't actually shortlisted for the Oscar, since it only reached the submission stage.
