What The Third Wife Is About
The Third Wife, director Ash Mayfair's debut feature, follows a fourteen year old girl who becomes the third wife of a wealthy landowner in 19th century Vietnam. After it opened in Vietnam on May 17, 2019, a major controversy erupted once it emerged that lead actress Nguyễn Phương Trà My was only thirteen during filming and had appeared in intimate scenes; the issue reached Vietnam's National Assembly, and the production company pulled the film from theaters nationwide after just four days, filing with the Ministry of Culture to do so. Director Mayfair defended the film, saying she was "speaking for artists and the right to create." Who it's for: anyone watching a period drama critique of child brides with full awareness of the real production controversy behind it. Who it's not for: viewers wanting to watch it purely as an aesthetic period piece without that context, since the tension between the film's subject and its actual production conditions is genuinely disputed.
