Thirteen-year-old Marta, who grew up in Switzerland, returns to southern Italy with her mother and older sister. She enrols in catechism class at the local church and finds games, competitions and religious pop songs, nothing that answers what she actually wants to know. The priest is more interested in the local elections than in faith. Alice Rohrwacher's first feature does not attack the church, it simply shows it as an institution, at a child's eye level. What Marta is looking for is belief; what she finds is adolescence. The south is not scenery here but the air of the film.
